BRP Recalls Ski-Doo Snowmobiles Due to Fire Hazard

On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc. (BRP), a manufacturer out of Valcourt, Canada, has recalled several of their 2013 Ski-Doo snowmobile models due to a fire hazard. The recall was prompted by reports that under certain conditions, the fuel pump inlet fitting can potentially come into contact with the oil tank and break. This may lead to a fuel leak. If such leakage occurs, fuel vapor in the presence of an ignition source could result in fire and can potentially cause serious injuries to the Ski-Doo snowmobile rider as well as bystanders.

The recall covers approximately 10,200 units, including twenty-three 2013 model Ski-Doo snowmobiles. The recalled snowmobiles were sold at authorized Ski-Doo dealers nationwide from March 2012 through January 2013 from approximately $8,000 to $12,000. According to BRP officials, they have received 3 reports of fires associated with the product defect. However, no injuries have been reported in connection with the fuel pump defect.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc. have instructed consumers to stop using the recalled Ski-Doo snowmobiles immediately. Consumers are instructed to contact an authorized BRP dealer to schedule a free repair appointment, during which the dealer will install fuel and oil tank spacers. In addition, BRP has notified registered consumers directly about the Ski-Doo snowmobile recall.
