Mr. Coffee Single Cup Brewers Recalled

In a voluntary recall (along with the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada), Jarden Consumer Solutions is recalling a total of 600,000 Mr. Coffee single cup brewers because of a potential burn hazard. Of the 600,000 units being recalled, 520,000 were distributed in the United States and 80,700 were distributed in Canada.

Jarden has received 164 reports so far complaining that the brewing chamber opens and expels hot coffee grounds and water. It appears a buildup of steam can develop in the water reservoir that can force the brewing chamber to open resulting in injuries. Possible injuries include burns to the user’s face, upper torso, and hands.

The coffeemaker comes in black with silver, red or white trim. It is about 11 inches tall and has a Brew Now/Off button and a removable drip tray. They were sold by retailers including Bed Bath & Beyond, Brandsmart, JC Penny, Kmart, Lowe’s, Target and Walmart between September 2010 and August 2012. They retailed between $60 and $80, and were manufactured in China. Online, they were sold at www.mrcoffee.com.

Consumers are urged to stop using the brewers immediately and contact Jarden at 800-993-8609 (the recall hotline) or visit www.mrcoffeerecall.com for details on getting a free replacement unit. If you think you may have an affected unit.
