BMW Recalls 1.3 Million Vehicles World-Wide

German automaker BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) is recalling 1.3 million of its luxury vehicles, world-wide. The recall is due to defects with a battery cable cover in the trunk of the affected vehicle. According to BMW's statement, the improper mounting "can result in the electrical system malfunctioning, the vehicle failing to start and, in some cases, to charring or fire."

The vehicles affected by the recall are the BMW 5 and 6 Series models manufactured between 2003 and 2010. When asked, BMW denied that any accident or injury led to the massive recall. A BMW spokesman said that the recall is simply a precautionary safety measure and that no accidents have yet been reported.

According to the information coming out of Frankfurt, affected vehicle owners will be notified by BMW in writing of the recall. Affected vehicle owners will be directed to take the vehicles to an authorized repair facility or a BMW dealership for repairs. The repairs are expected to take thirty minutes and be free of charge to the owner.

This is one of the largest recalls by BMW in a long time. Indeed, this recall comes on the heels of BMW's agreement with United States safety regulators to pay $3 million in civil penalties for failing to timely report safety defects to consumers and the federal government. Perhaps this massive recall is in response to the prior slap on the wrist. In any event, BMW has officially filed a notification for these defects with the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
