Paralysis and Death on the Rise Following Steroid Injections

The United States Food and Drug Administration is starting to review the side effects and safety issues of epidural steroid injections. These types of injections have become a more popular way for physicians to conservatively treat neck and back pain prior to surgery. Studies indicate that these shots – which involve an injection of a steroid, and sometimes other substances, into the epidural space near the spinal cord – are being increasingly used throughout the country. One such study found injections to Medicare patients increased between 2000 and 2010 approximate 159 percent.

Along with the increase in these injections has come an increase in injury and death. Our law firm has handled these types of cases that involve both injury and death. Most of the victims are younger and are just seeking pain relief so they can go about living their lives. It is estimated that 8.9 million Americans received the shots last year. While many patients experience relief from these injections, there are some patients who incur unexpected complications including paralysis and death. If you or a loved one has experienced an unexpected complication from an epidural steroid injection, please call our firm if we can help you investigate your potential claim.
