Cargill Turkey Recall Update

Photo of Brant Stogner

According to The Washington Post, Cargill is recalling 36 million pounds of infected turkey. The meat giant's turkey is already linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak that has killed at least one person and injured at least 76 others. Twenty-six different states, from coast to coast, have already reported cases of illnesses related to the contaminated turkey.

According to Cargill on Wednesday, it is recalling both fresh and frozen ground turkey products produced in Cargill's Springdale, Arkansas plant from February through August due to the salmonella contamination. The Minnesota company also added that it is suspending all ground turkey production at the plant until they can determine the source of the outbreak. This suspension comes on the heels of the information released by the CDC this week.

All packages marked with the code "Est. P-963" on the label are being recalled as possibly contaminated. Cargill markets its food under several different brands, including Cargill's Honeysuckle White. If you have ANY turkey products you are about to consume or prepare for cooking, make sure that the packages do not have the label "Est. P-963." Consuming this food could be deadly.

The CDC said this particular salmonella strain is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics. The most common symptoms of salmonella are diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever within 8-72 hours after ingesting a contaminated product. As shown above, there is already one death attributed to this outbreak.
