2011 MABATx Foundation Luncheon a Great Success

I am thrilled to report that the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation's (MABATx Foundation) Sixth Annual Scholarship Luncheon benefitting Hispanic law students, held last Wednesday, August 17 at the downtown Double Tree Hotel, was very successful. Every year, the luncheon raises money to donate to the three law schools in our community, and this year was no different. Several thousand was raised for scholarships that are given each year to outstanding Houston-area law students who best exemplify leadership, commitment, justice and equality within the Hispanic community and beyond.

Another important aspect of the annual luncheon is to honor people in the community that exemplify the goals and ideals of the Foundation. This year the honorees included: Alva Treviño General Counsel of Metro (Outstanding Service in the Community as the General Counsel for the Metropolitan Transit Authority); Joe Gonzalez owner of the Mamacita's Mexican Restaurant and Cantina (Outstanding Service in the Community as an Entrepreneur); Johnny Garza of Adame & Associates (Outstanding Young Latino Leader); Pedro Rojas of KXLN Channel 45 (Outstanding Service in the Community as a Pioneer in the Media Industry); Honorable Wallace B. Jefferson (Outstanding Service in the Community as Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Texas); and Richard "Racehorse" Haynes (Lifetime Achievement). The keynote address at this year's Luncheon was given by Larry Thompson, Texas attorney and author of legal thrillers, including his newest, The Trial. All of the guests and speakers were incredible, and delivered thoughtful remarks about their experiences and involvement with MABATx, to the enjoyment of everyone in attendance.

As the success of each year's luncheon surpasses the last, I am reminded of how truly blessed I am to be a part of such a great organization, and thankful for all of the help and support we have received from the community in the pursuit of our goals. Check back soon for more MABATx updates.
