Man killed in hit and run on Gulf Freeway

Early Monday morning a young man in Houston was killed when he was struck twice by vehicles while trying to cross the Gulf Freeway. While the driver of the first vehicle that struck the man remained at the scene, the driver of the second vehicle fled.

The victim was described as being in either his late twenties or early thirties. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Local new agencies have not yet reported his name as his identity is still being verified by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Scientists.

According to a report from ABC 13 News, the tragic accident occurred at 6900 Gulf Freeway at about 12:30 am on Monday. Apparently the deceased was trying to cross the freeway on his bicycle at the time that he was struck. Houston police indicate that the victim may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident.

While attempting to cross the freeway the man was first struck by a Dodge pickup truck. This collision knocked the man off of his bicycle but left the pickup truck driver uninjured. After he had been knocked off of his bike, a he was hit again by a white Ford Explorer.

The driver of the Ford Explorer did not stop after striking the man. A witness drove after the white explorer until the driver of the Ford explorer jumped out of the vehicle and ran away on foot. Police are continuing to investigate to determine the identity of the driver of the Explorer.
