Justice Eva Guzman becomes the first Latina to serve on the Texas Supreme Court.

The history of Texas has had many firsts. This great state has seen many heroes and leaders evolve and do great things. Others have become wonderful role models for our youth and all to follow. Surprisingly, even in 2009, yet another first in Texas history has emerged. Last week, Texas Governor Rick Perry named Justice Eva Guzman to replace Scott Brister on the Texas Supreme Court. This monumentous event marked a special place in history for all Texans, especially to those of Hispanic decent, since Guzman, a Houstonian, becomes the first Hispanic woman to serve on the bench.

Justice Guzman, who currently serves on the Texas 14th Court of Appeals (Houston), is a child of an immigrant welder and cleaning lady. All of us at Abraham Watkins, and in the Houston community as a whole, are so proud of Justice Guzman, and all that she has accomplished in her career. She is certainly a role model for Latina girls in Texas, but also for all Texan boys and girls that dream to become someone that will make a difference in the future.

In August of this year, Justice Guzman was named the Judge of the Year by the MABATx Foundation. Justice Guzman has always supported MABATx and its Foundation with both her presence and inspiration. In addition, Justice Guzman was named the 2009 Hispanic National Bar Association Latina Judge of the Year.

Justice Guzman has always stated that one of her biggest passions throughout her career has been education. She understands that she is a role model and hopes to inspire Latino kids and all kids to dream big, work hard and make good choices.

We should all praise Governor Perry for this selection, for it not only makes Texas history, but it will allow many more Texans to dream big dreams and maybe achieve another first in Texas history.
