Government Warns about Deadly Bassinets

After two more babies have died, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a new warning about a bassinet named "Simplicity close-sleeper/bedside sleeper." The infants were killed when they were "trapped" by the bassinets. The bassinets have already been recalled, but not all parents have received the warning.

The safety hazard with the "3-in-1 and 4-in1 convertible bassinets" is the bars: they are spaced too far apart and babies get their heads caught in them. A 2-month old baby girl suffocated last September in Georgia, and in January of this year a 6-month old Fort Worth girl was killed when her head was trapped between the bars.

Though a prior warning was issued by the CPSC in August 2008 after two previous deaths, and the bassinets made before May 2008 have been recalled, the message was not effective enough to spare at least two more families from suffering the pain of the loss of their baby girls.
