Press Release - Houston, Texas (August 27, 2009)

Houston, Texas (August 27, 2009) - As many lawyers know, law school can be not only demanding of one's time, but also on one's bank account. Fortunately, the Mexican-American Bar Association of Texas Foundation (MABATx Foundation) hosted their Fourth Annual Luncheon benefiting Hispanic law student scholarships Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Downtown Doubletree Hotel in Houston. The scholarships are awarded to outstanding law students who best exemplify leadership, commitment, justice and equality within the Hispanic community and beyond. "It is important that we encourage a new generation of lawyers to have the courage and strength to be committed to their clients but also committed to their communities," said attorney [email protected], Jr., founder of MABATx Foundation and partner at Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend in Houston. Scholarships are awarded to law students from each of the three Houston-based law schools. The MABATx Foundation is a non-profit organization founded to encourage justice and leadership within the Hispanic community.

The MABATx Foundation's Fourth Annual Luncheon included keynote speakers Judge Josefina Rendon of the 165th Judicial District Court and Charles Bacarisse the Vice President for Advancement at Houston Baptist University. MABATx Foundation also honors people in the community that exemplify the goals and ideals of the Foundation. This year the honorees included: Jose Cruz of the Houston Astros (Lifetime Achievement), Justice Eva Guzman of the 14th Court of Appeals (Outstanding Service in the Judiciary), Bill Balleza of KPRC Channel 2 (Pioneer in the Media Industry), Hilton Koch of Hilton Furniture and Mattresses (Ingenuity as an Entrepreneur), and Sheriff Adrian Garcia the Harris County Sheriff (Outstanding Service for the City of Houston).

The MABATx Foundation is already planning for next year's Luncheon (August 2010) and encourages all to attend and contribute to this noble cause.
