MABATX Foundation Celebrates Another Great Year

It is reassuring to witness people giving back to their communities. The Mexican American Bar Association of Texas Foundation (MABATx Foundation) stands on the principle that service to the Hispanic community by means of leadership, commitment, justice and equality is essential for the betterment of our entire populace here in Houston.

A couple of weeks ago, the MABATx Foundation held its Fourth Annual Scholarship Luncheon benefiting Hispanic law students at the Downtown Doubletree Hotel in Houston, Texas. It was our most successful year to date! The MABATx Foundation was able to award multiple scholarships to each Houston-based law school. I would personally like to thank all of you who contributed because without generous donations to the Foundation, none of this would be possible.

To illustrate the work we do at MABATx Foundation, I would like you to read the excerpt below which was taken from a letter I received from one of last year's scholarship recipients. Here is what she had to say:

Receiving this scholarship is helping me in more than just a financial way. Receiving the scholarship has reinvigorated my confidence, and it gives me another great reason to continue working toward my goals. As a professional student, I at times struggle with my confidence and stamina while trying to push forward. ... Knowing that a committee of community leaders have looked at what I have done and have found me deserving of such an award-is encouraging.

-Claudia Madigral

This is a great example as to why we work so hard at the MABATx Foundation-to provide a new generation of lawyers the tools they need to succeed not only in law school, but well into their law practice.

As mentioned earlier, this was our most successful year to date. The Luncheon included keynote speakers Judge Josefina Rendon of the 165th Judicial District Court and Charles Bacarisse the Vice President for Advancement at Houston Baptist University. MABATx Foundation also honors people in the community that exemplify the goals and ideals of the Foundation. This year the honorees included: Jose Cruz of the Houston Astros (Lifetime Achievement), Justice Eva Guzman of the 14th Court of Appeals (Judge of the Year), Bill Balleza of KPRC Channel 12 (Pioneer in the Media Industry), Hilton Koch (Ingenuity as an Entrepreneur), and Sheriff Adrian Garcia (Outstanding Service for the City of Houston).

We are already planning for the Fifth Annual Scholarship Luncheon (August 2010) and encourage all to attend and contribute to this noble cause.
