Ethanol Truck Spill in Winnie

Photo of Muhammad Aziz

Big Rigs carrying ethanol are among the most dangerous vehicles on the road. Ethanol is a highly flammable liquid used in many products but most commonly used by the fuel industry. South Texas has many refineries which increases the number of tanker trucks carrying hazardous materials, such as ethanol, on the roads. Just this week about 70 miles east of Houston one of these tanker trucks turned over and spilled about 1500 gallons of this explosive liquid. Not only was this accident a danger to the truck driver and everyone who shared that particular stretch of I-10 with him, this spill put residents in the surrounding area in danger.

Ten houses in the community of Winnie, Texas were temporarily evacuated while authorities cleaned up the ethanol spill. Authorities closed I-10 in both directions and hazmat was brought to the scene to aid in the clean-up. This particular spill took all day to clear but did not result in any explosions or fires. The driver of the big rig was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and was the only person requiring medical attention.
