Firm Attorney Speaks About Civil Law

Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend attorney Jay Jackson was invited to speak on December 9, 2009 to the Memorial High School class of Ms. Lori Baker. The class of high school juniors and seniors focuses upon business law and computer skills. Mr. Jackson's topic was civil law.

Beginning with a description of the cases he handled during recent day, Mr. Jackson introduced the students to the wide variety of legal issues that are included within civil law. He distinguished civil law from criminal law, and explained some of the many areas of law that civil lawyers handle. Mr. Jackson taught the students that some civil lawyers have an office practice, while others, such as the attorneys at Abraham, Watkins, have a trial practice. In addition, he briefly illustrated how the "discovery" process works in civil suits.

After his prepared remarks, Mr. Jackson answered questions posed by the students. That led to a discussion of the admittance to, and training provided by, law schools. Mr. Jackson closed his talk with words of encouragement for the students, urging them to make good decisions and pursue their goals. Both the teacher and the class members warmly expressed their appreciation afterwards.

Mr. Jackson is a member of the Houston Bar Association, and, like other members of the firm, he volunteers for the Speakers' Bureau. That is a program of the HBA which provides speakers upon request to inform the public about the law. Both the HBA and Abraham, Watkins are passionately committed to educating citizens about the American system of justice.
