On Monday, October 19, 2009, Jay Jackson, one of the attorneys with Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Friend, was invited to speak with two classes of high school seniors at Incarnate Word Academy about the nature and importance of jury service.
Mr. Jackson talked with the first and second period government classes taught by Mark Richardson. In the fast-paced presentation, Mr. Jackson provided insight into the nature of the court system, how jurors are called for service, how they are assigned to and selected for individual cases, and how a case proceeds to trial. The speech was enlivened with real-life court cases, and Mr. Jackson provided examples of how jury selection is conducted. After a question-and-answer session, the time concluded with a short opportunity for the seniors to consider the facts of a dispute and deliberate like real jurors.
Mr. Jackson is a member of the Houston Bar Association, and he volunteers for the Speakers' Bureau. That is a program of the HBA which provides speakers upon request to educate the public about the law. Both the HBA and Abraham, Watkins are passionately committed to the jury trial system of justice in America.
