The FDA has recently issued a public warning advisory to consumers to not use certain Zicam cold remedy products, after receiving more than 130 reports of loss of sense of smell associated with the use of:
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel
- Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs
- Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs
The maker of the products, Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., has 15 days to respond to the allegations and reports indicate that Matrixx believes the FDA's action is "unwarranted." Nonetheless, a Zicam recall may be in order.
Lawsuits have already been filed by Zicam users against both Matrixx Initiatives, Inc., and Zicam, LLC, claiming that Zicam has caused anosmia or loss of smell and taste. Several users have reported a significant burning sensation after using the nasal spray and the FDA's advisory warning is aimed to prevent others from using the drug. The current scientific explanation is that this medicine has a zinc component in it and when the zinc gluconate reaches the nasal passage, throat and pharynx, the adverse side effects are activated.
Please look in your medicine cabinets and save any of the mentioned products as potential evidence, if you've had any adverse side effects.
