(Houston, Texas) October 3 - Attorney Benny Agosto, Jr., a partner at Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Sorrels, Agosto & Aziz of Houston, Texas, has been elected President of the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA). The first Texas attorney to hold this leadership post, he was installed on Saturday, September 3, 2011.
An attorney since 1995 and board certified in personal injury trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, Benny Agosto, Jr. has been active in the HNBA for many years. Mr. Agosto is a former Region XII President of the HNBA, Co-Editor-In-Chief of the HNBA Journal of Law &Policy, and has sat on the HNBA Board of Governors since 2006. He is a co-founder of the HNBA's Legal Education Fund (LEF), a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing scholarships to minority law students. He is also the founder of the Mexican American Bar Association of Texas (MABATx) Foundation, an organization that has raised over $100,000 in scholarships for Hispanic students. He is past president of MABATx.
Benny's parents, both of whom left school after sixth grade, always emphasized the importance of getting an education. "I remember my father telling me that no one can ever take that away from you. My parents knew the struggles of being a migrant family without a formal education." He is deeply committed to the students who benefit from scholarships provided by the partnership between the HNBA and the HNBA's LEF.
In addition to his work with the HNBA and MABATx, Benny is a member of the State Bar of Texas and a Fellow of the Houston Bar Foundation. He has been named a Texas Super Lawyer (2004-2011), and was listed in H Magazine in Top Lawyers for the People in 2008. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer, not only to other lawyers and business groups, but also to high school and college students in the Houston area - bringing a message of hope and service to Hispanic students in the region as he speaks about the jury system and the importance of the U.S. Constitution.
The HNBA serves as the national voice for the concerns of Hispanics in the legal community. It promotes the retention and recruitment of Hispanic students in law schools, holds informational and educational workshops and conferences, testifies at all levels of government about issues of concern to the Hispanic community, and promotes the American legal system within the Hispanic community. Mr. Agosto is the 38th president since the organization was founded in 1972.
