On Wednesday, February 17, 2010, Jay Jackson, one of the attorneys with ABRAHAM, WATKINS, NICHOLS, SORRELS, AGOSTO & FRIEND, was invited to speak with high school students at Memorial Senior High School.
Mr. Jackson talked with the Business Law class taught by Ms. Lori Baker. Mr. Jackson was asked to describe for students the nature of the "civil law." In the fast-paced and interactive presentation, Mr. Jackson distinguished the field of criminal law and provided insight into the vast diversity of issues that come under the rubric of "civil law," from medical malpractice claims, to labor law disputes, to family law cases, and even to civil rights. He further described the types of issues commonly handled by lawyers who have an office practice. The students enjoyed the numerous real life examples Mr. Jackson provided to illustrate the wide range and challenges of civil litigation. He further explained for the students the sources of the law, such as the constitution, the statutes passed by Congress and the Texas Legislature, and the common law based upon court decisions. And by posing concrete questions raised by pending cases, he gave students the opportunity to consider how they would rule on actual legal issues.
Mr. Jackson is a member of the Houston Bar Association, and he volunteers for the Speakers' Bureau. That is a program of the HBA which provides speakers upon request to educate the public about the law. Both the HBA and ABRAHAM, WATKINS are passionately committed to the educating the public about the system of justice in America.
